Listen to enjoy some great English fluency building tips from games like Secret of Mana, Super Mario Bros, Super Metroid and the Legend of Zelda!

Video game speed runners and successful speakers of another language have at least three things in common:

1. They begin with a goal, then focus on strategy and tactics

2. They look that things in a different way, asking what could be instead of what is

3. They develop mastery through experimentation and iteration, not rote repetition

I also answer the question of whether or not there is truly a best method for learning languages. :) Enjoy episode 18 and let us know what you think in the comments below. :)

Thinking of clever ways to make the English language simple and intuitive for learners is challenging work. The REALLY tricky part, however, is dealing with all of the embarrassing mistakes and interruptions during video shoots. I try to make finished videos as polished and professional as possible, but it takes a LOT of effort to get there.

While shooting, I have to deal with my own mistakes – like forgetting what to say, or fumbling over my words – as well as all of the loud children playing outside, passing trains, barking dogs, community announcements and other noises that make me record take after take until I get the job done. I’m not perfect either, even though I try to look that way, so remember that you don’t have to be either.

I’ll continue to do what I do because I love seeing the look on the faces of learners when they finally understand something, or move to the next level in their learning. Never let the passing trains, phone calls and garbage trucks in your life keep you from your goals! :)
