English Language Learning Myths
Many people try learning English by memorizing vocabulary, and then talking to English language speakers in person or online; however, they often find that they’re still unable to speak. Something keeps them stuck: DOUBT.
You’ve likely experienced this many times…
Maybe you forget a word, so your mind goes blank. Or you’re unsure about a grammar point, so you have to translate in your head. Or you’re nervous about your accent, so you stay silent.
Doubt is why many English learners can live in English-speaking countries for years, and even have chances to speak every day, yet still have trouble communicating. The REAL problem is they’re still uncertain about things. So they lack the CONFIDENCE to express themselves.
See, the surprising truth is, you DON’T become a fluent speaker by speaking. Speech is actually the RESULT of understanding a language well. You must first know a language well enough to eliminate any doubts about vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, or anything else. Until you end these doubts, you will most likely struggle to express yourself.
So, how can you get fluent in English at home, by yourself?
Becoming Fluent
Unfortunately, most English lessons and programs cause you MORE doubt. They give you word lists and rules to memorize, but not the certainty and confidence you need to communicate. They also teach you formal English, but don’t prepare you for the real, spoken language.
This is why it’s NOT your fault if you struggle to speak!
But here’s the GOOD NEWS: Instead of studying more, or forcing yourself to speak, you can automatically get the certainty and confidence you need to communicate with what I call “fluency triggers.”
A “fluency trigger” is an experience, story, visual example, or anything else that replaces your doubt with certainty. These triggers give you an “aha moment” that destroys doubt, like when you solve a puzzle, so you speak without hesitation!
But let me prove this by comparing a typical language lesson with a “fluency trigger.” I think you’ll FEEL a big increase in confidence with the “fluency trigger.” 🙂
For this example, since I don’t know your first language, I’m going to teach you the numbers one through nine in an “alien” language.
Please take a moment to try and memorize the characters below:
Next, Here’s A Quiz.
Can you translate all the “alien” characters back into numbers?
Now, if you couldn’t remember everything, it’s NOT your fault. But even if you did, you probably won’t remember them next week… Because the truth is I didn’t really “teach” you anything.
Like a typical English lesson, I only gave you translations to study and memorize. I didn’t give you the CERTAINTY you need to recall and USE these characters, which is what a teacher is supposed to do.
So, let me give you certainty and confidence now.
Scroll down to see a “fluency trigger” that will remove any doubts you might have about the “alien” characters:
Didn’t that moment of understanding feel GREAT? 🙂
It happened almost instantly, right? And you didn’t need to write each character 20 times, or say anything in front of other people.
Because the “fluency trigger” destroyed all doubt, I bet you could easily write a THOUSAND of these characters!
Next, here’s an English language “fluency trigger”:
Isn’t that cool? Without any translations or confusing explanations, the “fluency trigger” helped you understand the difference between the phrasal verbs “fall over” and “fall down,” like a native. So now you have more confidence about SAYING these very common phrases!
Can you imagine how quickly many more “fluency triggers” could improve your speaking, and change your life, WITHOUT drills, memorization, translations, or a practice partner?
This is the real “secret” to understanding English like a native, so you SPEAK fluently!
Isn’t this exciting?
The best part is, “fluency triggers” can guarantee confidence in EVERYTHING, including grammar, pronunciation, and advanced vocabulary!
Accessing Fluency Triggers
There are many kinds of “fluency triggers,” but each works to remove any doubts you may have about English. Here’s how to get many more of them:

- Accelerated learning: You can learn English faster when you focus on your English language journey, and you don’t have to worry about foreign language anxiety or social dynamics that can affect learning in an in-person class
Try An English Language Learning App
An English language learning app is a tool you can download on your smartphone and take anywhere. Immerse Yourself In The English Language
Immersing yourself in a language is a fantastic, effective way to kickstart your language-learning journey, although this can be more difficult without the help of a teacher. Using these tips, you can give yourself more “fluency triggers” in your home.
- Watch English movies and TV shows: You’ll hear a lot of spoken English, and you can turn on the subtitles to confirm you understand the meaning of words you hear during the show.
- Listen to English music artists: Go to YouTube and create a playlist of songs sung in English. You can find the lyrics to many songs online with a Google search. Print the lyrics and use them to follow along with the song while listening. You can even compare lyrics if the song is available in your native language.
- Listen to podcasts in English: Millions of podcasts are available online, and many feature the English language. Choose subject areas that interest you and search for podcasts on those subjects. Podcasts are a great way to familiarize yourself with natural speaking patterns and verbal interaction, particularly if the podcasts feature co-hosts or hosts interviewing guests. Focus on topics you’re interested in, so understanding comes more easily.
- Read English language books: Many popular books are translated into multiple languages. Buy a book in your language and a copy in English. Compare text as you read to ensure you understand the story.
Talk To Native English Speakers
Remember that “fluency triggers” give you the fastest way to eliminate any foreign language anxiety. But once you’re feeling confident, you can expand your English language skills by communicating with native English speakers online, and where you live. Again, look for people who share your interests. English will flow more easily when you’re worrying less about the language, and enjoying discussing your hobbies, profession or other interests!
